What’s specific to a custom PHP site
This is the one platform where Cookie Craft cannot detect your database automatically — there is no standard configuration file to read, because your site is not a standard product. The installer tells you exactly that, in plain language, and opens the four fields for you. It is not an error; it is the expected path.
You can safely point Cookie Craft at a database you already use for something else. It only ever creates and touches its own tables, prefixed distinctly. The guide also covers the case that trips people up: if your pages end in .html rather than .php, they cannot run PHP and the includes appear as text — renaming them, or asking your host to allow PHP inside .html, is the fix.
